The cool thing with communicating effectively with your dog is that you learn to speak "dog".
This is what lets you fix behavior problems. The basic obedience training is a great start, and that's exactly where you should start. However, basic obedience training really won't help you with behavior problems.
For example, let's say you have a dog that barks constantly. You've worked on basic obedience training – now you have a dog that sits and stays, but also barks.
The way to remedy that problem is through communication…that same communication you have been developing during basic obedience training. When you are solving behavior problems, this communication is taken to the next level.
That next level is learning to communicate in a way that is meaningful to your dog. This means that your dog learns exactly what you want done, and it motivates them to do it.
This is exactly how successful dog owners are able to overcome behavior problems.

One thing many dog owners struggle with is inadvertently encouraging bad behavior in their dogs. You could be causing many behavior problems without realizing it.
Let's take barking for example. Your dog is outside and barking constantly. So you go to the door and let them inside so they will stop barking. Solved the problem right?
Not quite…
What you've actually done is told your dog that it is ok to bark to get what they want. The dog wanted to come inside and decided that barking would manipulate you into letting them inside. Once you "gave in" – probably without even realizing what you were doing – you dog learned that when it wants something from you, all they have to do is bark.
Many problem behaviors are cause related, just like the example. Keep this in mind, and think about how you communicate verbally and non-verbally with your dog.
